Sony VPL-HW45ES black - Entry into high-end home cinema

The Sony VPL-HW45ES is the little brother of the Sony HW65ES, offering attractive high-end features.

Reality Creation

The Sony VPL-HW45ES is the lowest cost offering of the Sony home cinema projector family, but in terms of features, it brings a lot to the table. One is its 2nd generation ‘Reality Creation’ which originally comes from the Sony VW models with 4K resolution. It correct  colours and textures in the picture to enhance it even further.

Motionflow technology

As is typical for most high end home cinema projectors, the Sony HW45ES provides  frame interpolation technology. Here it is called Sony Motionflow. It ensures fast and smooth movement in the image which is particularly useful with action films where quick camera pans and fast movement are common. The frame interpolation can be set in several steps, so that you can choose how much effect it has on the image. Home theater users, who prefer jerking like in the cinema, can of course disable this feature.

Difference to HW65ES

One point that many home cinema fans will look for is the difference between the Sony HW65ES to the Sony HW45ES. This is not all that obvious when taking a glance at first glance at the specs. The difference is the dynamic iris. The HW65ES is indicated with a dynamic contrast of 120,000: 1 whereas the HW45ES gives no value. Here, the difference between the devices is recognisable and the HW65ES has a clear advantage when moving quickly between dark and light scenes. This is naturally reflected in the Sony HW45ES price, which is noticeably cheaper than the HW65. Another difference is the missing RJ45 interface for controlling the projector. Here, the HW65 offers more  possibilities for the integration into a home theater control system, another reason that the Sony VPL-HW35ES price is considerably cheaper than its big brother.

Contrast Enhancer

Contrast Enhancer technology ensures optimised contrast in every scene. It scans the image for contrast-rich content and then evaluates it. This allows the projector to then optimise the contrast according to the scene. This feature does not provide any compensation for the missing dynamic iris, but it offers a recognisable value in dark scenes.

In terms of flexibility, the Sony VPL-HW45ES is on the same level as the HW65. Compared to many other home cinema projectors, it offers a really attractive lens with 1.6x zoom that also has a lens shift function. Since the Sony VPL-HW45ES price is lower than some other high-end projectors, it is understandable that the lens settings are done manually rather than via the remote control. This is true for zoom, focus and lens shift.

3D is still an attractive point in the home cinema. And the Sony VPL-HW45ES does it very well, which in small part is thanks to the 3D glasses. The projector uses the RF technology to sync the 3D glasses, which is more reliable compared to the earlier IR technology and provides a more stable transmission. The HW45ES is directly 3D-capable, so you just need an HDMI cable between projector and 3D Blu ray player. The RF glasses offer a faster sync, which ensures a better switching of the glasses and makes the picture brighter and more pleasant.

Low latency

One property that appeals specifically to gamers is the low latency. This is a special topic for PC and console games because a delay between what's happening in the game to being replicated on screen can be decisive. Here the Sony HW45ES is favorably placed, since it reduces this so-called lag.

SXRD technology

Like all current Sony home cinema projectors, the Sony VPL-HW45ES relies on the SXRD technology. It combines the positive aspects of LCD technology in terms of color rendering and the sharpness of the DLP technology. In addition, there is an impressive contrast on the part of the SXRD panels.

Colour of chassis

The Sony HW45 is available in two different chassis colors, in white and black. The Sony VPL-HW45ES black is interesting for the dark home cinema, while the Sony VPL-HW45ES is white interesting for the living room.

The SXRD projector uses the 1920 x 1080 pixels of a Full HD resolution in 16:9 format. Its light output of 1700 lumens is more effective than it sounds meaning you can use the HW45 in the living room if you can control the lighting. Sony give no data about the contrast with the HW45 because of the missing dynamic iris, but in our Sony VPL-HW45ES review, the contrast levels were excellent. In terms of operating noise, the projector comes out very well yet again, here it is just 22 dB.

Here you could say, Sony is economical, but the HW45 offers everything you should need. It has 2 HDMI inputs for image transmission. In addition, there is an RS232 interface for a control system. A USB type A connection is used for firmware updates and IR controls can be connected to a 3.5 mm IR connector.

In the box you will find a power cord, a remote control with batteries, a quick start guide and a detailed manual on CD-ROM.

The Sony 3D Full-HD projector offers an attractive entry into the high-end home cinema and is pleasantly flexible in the set-up making it attractive for many rooms. Its  image quality is superb and thanks to the "low latency" feature, it is also attractive for gamers. All in all, the Sony offers excellent performance. And the Sony HW45ES price is absolutely attractive when considering its ability.
